Schools often struggle to fund the purchasing of books for their classroom libraries, and there are numerous resources for helping schools find those funds through grants and other programs.
We have compiled a list of organizations that offer grants for literacy and education. This list is not all-inclusive, and if you know of other resources, please send them to us and we will help get the word out.
The Pilcrow Foundation
The Pilcrow Foundation was founded in 2013 to continue the work of The Libri Foundation. Our mission is to provide new, quality, hardcover children's books to rural public libraries across the United States.

Snapdragon Book Foundation
The Snapdragon Book Foundation was started in December, 2008 to provide funds to improve school libraries for disadvantaged children. Grants will be awarded to public, private, and experimental schools.

National Home Library Foundation
The National Home Library Foundation makes grants to fund books for libraries, schools and literacy programs serving children, teens or adults in need of reading and learning resources.

Laura Busch Foundation for American Libraries
The Laura Bush Foundation for America’s Libraries provides funds to our Nation’s neediest schools so that they can extend, update, and diversify the book and print collections in their libraries with the goal of encouraging students to develop a love of reading and learning.

Beyond Words: The Dollar General School Library Relief Program
The Beyond Words program, administered by the American Association of School Librarians (AASL), benefits public school libraries recovering from major disasters. The fund provides grants for books, media, and equipment that support learning in a school library environment.

Collaborative School Library Award
The Collaborative School Library Award recognizes and encourages collaboration and partnerships between school librarians and teachers in meeting goals outlined in Empowering Learners: Guidelines for School Library Programs through joint planning of a program, unit or event in support of the curriculum and using school library resources.

Innovative Reading Grant
The AASL Innovative Reading Grant supports the planning and implementation of a unique and innovative program for children which motivates and encourages reading, especially with struggling readers.

Barnes & Noble Local Sponsorships and Donations
The Barnes & Noble Community Business Development Program supports pre-K-12 schools and not-for-profit arts and literacy organizations. Programs are set up at the store level, and inquiries should be directed to the store manager or community business development manager.

RGK Foundation
RGK Foundation awards grants in the broad areas of Education, Community, and Health/Medicine. The Foundation's primary interests within Education include programs that focus on formal K-12 education (particularly mathematics, science and reading), teacher development, literacy, and higher education.
